Wow, it's Sophomore year already! I can't believe how the time has passed. This summer I had the privilege to go to Valencia, Spain, to take immersion courses for a month and a half! Spain was amazing. Getting there was even an adventure. I traveled for 24 hours (including delays) and whatnot. To my horror, my three years of Spanish in high school seemed to do me absolutely no good in Spain. Spanish spoken in Spain is extremely different than Spanish spoken here, which is typically Spanish from Mexico. It was pretty funny trying to see me communicate in my own version of Spanish sign language, while attempting to talk to the natives, during my first few weeks there.
Though I did not go through UC Berkeley's study abroad program, Berkeley offers a lot of opportunities to travel abroad to many different and exotic places around the world! I would highly recommend looking into our abroad program and what it offers, from Barcelona to Paris. The best way to broaden perspective, learn more about the world, and learn a language, is to actually live in different places in the world and to live in the country that speaks the language you want to learn! I will definitely post more about my fun/exciting adventures in Valencia, but for now this link should give you a good perspective of what Berkeley can offer you in your hopes to "Rome" the world (just my own little version of a travel joke).
